In 1963, then-ELDYK officer Dimitrios Ioannidis - who would later become the head of the Greek military junta and the architect of the 1974 coup - along with Nikos Sampson, proposed to Archbishop Makarios that all Turkish Cypriots be eliminated by poisoning their water supply.
