The Polaris and it's underwhelming firepower

Hi all, just wanted to share my thoughts about my time using the Polaris.

About the Polaris, specifically regarding its weapon loadout. While I understand that the Polaris is primarily designed as a torpedo-focused ship, I feel the rest of its arsenal is significantly underpowered, which makes it less versatile and effective than it could be.

The bespoke size 6 ballistic cannons, for example, feel especially lackluster given their size and the ship's intended role as a combat vessel. Not only do they feel like they lack the punch one might expect from weapons of this calibre, but their reliance on ballistic ammunition is limiting due to the relatively low ammo capacity. In sustained engagements, this limitation can be a significant drawback.

  • In my opinion, the size 6 cannons would be far more effective and practical not being bespoke and instead being laser cannons. Switching to energy weapons would mitigate the ammo concerns, making them more suitable for prolonged combat scenarios and enhancing the ship’s overall effectiveness.
  • I also feel that the two size 3 quad turrets on the sides of the ship would be better being size 4s considering the Polaris size and the types of other ships the Polaris will fight, such as medium to heavy fighters at close range.
  • The remote missile turret I also feel is a weakness to the Polaris as I haven't seen that turret being useful at all, making the need for that turret to be a normal gunned turret a more useful change to cover the engines and rear of the ship.

It would be great to see some balance adjustments to bring these weapons in line with the Polaris’s role and potential. Improving the non-torpedo weaponry—whether through increased power or by rethinking the choice of weapon type—would add depth to its gameplay and give it a more well-rounded combat profile, ensuring it feels as formidable as its reputation suggests.

What does everyone else think? Do you agree the Polaris could use a bit more bite beyond its torpedoes?
