"Metal is classical music with distortion"

This is a quote I've heard many times through the years. Do you agree with it? Are there significant resemblances between metal and classical music?

Personally I find them to be polar opposites most of the time. But I really respect musicians of both genres - the requirements to master instruments and vocals are very high, and they appear more serious than a lot of other genres.
